L’ostéoporose ne présente aucun symptôme jusqu’à ce qu’une lésion survienne — et la plupart des personnes de plus de 65 ans ne demandent jamais le test que Medicare prend déjà en charge.

6. Sugary Soft Drinks

Soft drinks, especially colas, often contain phosphoric acid, which has been suspected to disrupt the calcium-phosphorus balance essential for healthy bones. However, the most likely reason for their association with lower bone density is displacement — people who consume multiple sodas daily often consume less milk or other calcium-rich beverages.

In addition to phosphoric acid, sugary soft drinks contribute to excess calorie intake, which can lead to weight gain and other metabolic problems that indirectly affect bone health.

While an occasional soda is unlikely to cause harm, regularly replacing calcium-rich drinks with sugary soft drinks may impair bone strength over time. Opting for beverages that provide calcium and limit added sugars is a safer choice for maintaining bone density.

7. Excessive Alcohol Consumption

Moderate alcohol intake, such as a glass of wine with dinner, is generally not harmful to bones. However, chronic excessive alcohol consumption interferes with calcium and vitamin D metabolism, both vital for bone maintenance.

Heavy drinking can:

Slow new bone formation.
Increase the risk of falls and fractures.
Disrupt hormones that regulate bone remodeling.
Lower overall bone density over time.

Maintaining alcohol consumption within recommended limits is important for preserving bone health and reducing fracture risk.

8. Highly Sweetened Coffee Drinks

While moderate coffee consumption has minimal impact on bone health, specialty coffee drinks loaded with sugar, flavored syrups, whipped cream, and multiple espresso shots can contribute to bone health concerns.

Caffeine slightly increases calcium excretion in urine, but the effect is small and can be balanced by adequate calcium intake. The greater concern with these drinks is the high sugar content and their displacement of more nutritious beverages.

To protect bones, it’s advisable to limit oversized specialty coffee drinks, reduce added sugars, and ensure sufficient calcium intake from diet or supplements.
